Exploiting Diversity for Multimedia Audio Streaming |
This work explores how to leverage diversity in cellular
environments for improving multimedia streaming applications,
especially audio streaming. The main motivation for this work stems
from the observation that cellular channels exhibit both uncorrelated
and correlated behavior on a variety of levels. Hence we first examined
the statistical properties of the cellular links, and
then proposed three different techniques exploiting channel and network
diversity to help improve statistical throughput and multimedia
quality.
Based on our empirical observations, we designed and
implemented a high quality multimedia streaming application called VorbisStreamer
augmented with Unequal Error Protection (UEP) channel coding techniques
to improve audio streaming performance. Our experiments over a cellular
GPRS network testbed demonstrated substantial benefits from each of the
proposed channel diversity schemes.
