MobiStream
Perceptual Video
Streaming with Virtual Channels |
MobiStream is
a video
streaming system that exploits the 'perceptual' value in the video
content and the characteristics of the link layer and physical layer
channels to enable error-resilient video streaming over Wide-area Wireless Networks (WWANs). MobiStream
introduces the concept of Virtual
Channels to virtualize the link and physical layer channels
in cellular environments. Virtual channels depart from the
traditional observation of the best-effort cellular data channels, to
offer video applications partial
control of these channels.
MobiStream introduces yet another concept, perceptual
slice-structured video coding
wherein video frames are partitioned into number of small
(independently decodable) slices, then prioritized, and reconstructed
according to their perceptual (visual) usefulness. The system
offers a number of other enhancements: slice-based coding, multiple
description video coding, low-delay inter-frame and intra-frame slice
interleaving, dynamic unequal error protection, and smart
slice-scheduling for efficient and error-resilient video streaming over
3G cellular links. Our experimentation using real traces from a
commercial CDMA 2000 EvDO network demonstrates substantial
benefits to end-user experience using MobiStream.
